Beware of some Ayurvedic Supplements
This information is courtesy of Dr. Andrew Weill and his November 2008 newsletter.
For information reasons, Ayurveda comes from India where it’s a 6000 year old healing practice. Some of it is very worthwhile as are some of the herbal formulas used in its practice. However, there are 193 ayurvedic herbal formulas that can be purchased online that contain measured metal concentrates. Researchers have checked this out using a special x-ray technology. They have found that one-fifth of the products, made in the US and abroad, have exceeded the acceptable levels of mercury, lead and arsenic. This information comes from JAMA (August 27, 2008). Dr Weill says, “I’d be cautious about buying such products online. Rasa shastra the ayurvedic practice of combining herbs with metals, minerals and gems, is a problem. While practitioners contend that harmful compounds are removed during a detoxification process, there is no evidence that this makes the products safer.”
