Managing SAD
If anyone doesn’t know what SAD stands for it means Seasonal Affective Disorder. It seems to come on when the season changes from summer and fall into winter when there is less daylight and in the northern climes less sunshine. I get it but through the years I’ve learned to manage it. One of the keys is to get sunshine for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day. Get outside on the sunny days no matter how cold it gets. Get a lightbox if you can afford one. These two suggestions seem to help the most. Next in line for help is B vitamins, St. John’s Wort (check with your Doctor first before starting any new vitamin or supplement), and follow a diet that will enhance your body’s production of seratonin. Tryptophan is a precurser to the production of seratonin in our bodies so foods that contain tryptophan can help as does the B vitamins, particularly B6. There is no supplement called seratonin.
Another help for SAD comes in the form of plain old exercise. Any kind will suffice. Psychologically, rent a comedy movie. Laughter is always good for us, no matter what.
So, remember, sunshine, eat healthy and laugh.
